Many of you know the story by now. In the 1990’s a group of moms gathered around the book, You Are Your Child’s First Teacher. Their conversations planted the seeds for an educational movement that continues in our community. The desire for a whole-child approach to learning led to the opening of Seaside Playgarden, an early childhood program often described by parents as a “magical place” for children to explore, grow and create.
Take a look at the Seaside Playgarden Documentary.
Based on our vision of joyful, creative and compassionate learning environments inspired by Waldorf education, our charter was written and then approved by Duval County Public Schools in December 2012. Eight months later, through the collaborative efforts of our grassroots group , Seaside Community Charter School opened at full enrollment.
Inch by inch and row by row, our gardens are growing, right along with our children. In three months, we’ve seen a child become a leader, learn to get dirty, write a sentence, sign their name in ASL, sing a spanish song, calm themselves during yoga, engage fully in artistic activity, harvest pole beans, play notes on the flute, and learn to surf. All of this happens within and alongside their development in literacy, science and mathematics. Whether it’s a visit to the farm, a walk to the construction site down the street, or taking care of baby chick eggs, these kids are joyfully engaged in their own learning!
Sadly, we bid farewell to Mrs. Glass as she moves to North Carolina. She will always be a part of our founding community. We welcome Mrs. Pierce as our first grade teacher!
As we look toward our future, we see more and more opportunity for the community to come together and grow just like our gardens and our children
